Starting Nursery as a Baby: A Guide for Working Parents in JLT

Many working parents in JLT start nursery when their baby is a few months old, and a good baby room will follow your own feeding and sleep routine rather than replace it. Plan a gradual settling-in period before you go back to work, and ask detailed questions about feeding, naps and daily communication. Rainbow Valley Nursery in Cluster Q, JLT, welcomes babies from 3 months.

When parents usually start

For most families in Dubai the start date is decided by work, not by the baby. Maternity leave ends, the office expects you back, and the question becomes where your little one will spend the day. Plenty of parents in JLT, Dubai Marina and JVT are a long way from grandparents, so a nursery with a proper baby room is often the only realistic option.

That is fine. Babies can settle very well in nursery when the room is calm, the staff are consistent and the routine at nursery follows the routine at home. The key is giving yourself enough time before your first day back at work, so settling-in is not rushed.

Rainbow Valley Nursery takes children from 3 months to 5 years and is open Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Those hours suit many parents working in JLT, the Marina or Media City, with time for the commute at either end. You can read more about how the daycare in JLT day is structured before you visit.

Feeding: breast milk, formula and starting solids

Feeding is usually the biggest worry, and it should be discussed in detail before your baby starts. A baby room should work with your plan, whatever it is.

  • Expressed breast milk. Ask how it is stored, labelled and warmed, and how leftover milk is handled at the end of the day. Bring bottles labelled with your baby's name and the date.
  • Formula. Most families send their own formula so the brand stays the same. Ask whether to send pre-measured portions or a full tin.
  • Starting solids. If your baby is moving onto purées or finger foods, agree on what is introduced at home first. New foods are best tried at home, so you can see how your baby reacts.
  • Feeding cues. Tell the staff how your baby shows hunger and how long a feed usually takes.

If you are breastfeeding and returning to work, ask if you can come in to feed during the day if your schedule allows. Some parents working nearby in JLT like having that option in the first weeks.

Always follow the feeding advice of your paediatrician. The nursery's job is to carry out your plan carefully and tell you how it went.

Sleep routines and naps

Young babies nap several times a day, and that does not stop at nursery. A good baby room keeps a quiet sleep area and follows each baby's individual pattern rather than putting everyone down at the same time.

Before you start, write down your baby's routine: roughly when they nap, how long for, and how they fall asleep. Rocked, fed, with a dummy, with a particular sleeping bag. The more detail, the better. A baby who always sleeps in a sleeping bag at home will usually settle faster if the same one comes to nursery.

Expect the naps to be a little shorter or more broken in the first couple of weeks. A new room has new sounds and new faces. That usually settles as your baby gets used to the place, and it is worth asking staff how naps went each day so you can plan the evening.

How settling-in works for babies

Settling-in is a gradual build-up rather than a single first day. A typical pattern looks like this:

  1. A short visit together. You stay in the room with your baby for an hour or so, so the staff can watch how you feed, hold and soothe them.
  2. A short separation. You leave for a short time and come back. Babies often cope better than parents with this step.
  3. Longer stays. The time apart increases over several days, usually including a feed and a nap at nursery.
  4. Full days. Once your baby is feeding and sleeping reasonably well, they move to their normal hours.

Aim to start settling-in at least two weeks before you return to work. That gives room for a cold, a bad night or a slower start without panic. Ask the team exactly how they plan settling-in for babies, as every nursery does it a little differently.

Questions to ask about infant care

When you book a tour, take a list. These are the questions that matter most for babies:

  • Who will care for my baby day to day, and will it usually be the same people?
  • Where do babies sleep, and how often are sleeping babies checked?
  • Where is breast milk or formula stored, and who prepares it?
  • How are nappy changes recorded, and what do you need me to supply?
  • How will you tell me about feeds, naps and nappies each day?
  • What happens if my baby becomes unwell during the day?
  • Is the baby room separate from the older children, and how do babies get time on the floor to move and explore?
  • How do you support babies who find separation hard?

Listen to how the answers are given, not just what is said. Staff who know the babies well tend to answer with specific, everyday detail.

What learning looks like at this age

Parents are sometimes surprised that a curriculum applies to babies. Under the EYFS framework, the earliest learning is about communication, movement and relationships: being talked to and sung to, reaching for things, tummy time, exploring textures and noticing faces. At Rainbow Valley, the Reggio Emilia inspired approach means babies are encouraged to explore with their senses and their curiosity is taken seriously, even at a few months old. The curriculum page explains how this develops as children grow.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my baby start at Rainbow Valley Nursery?

Rainbow Valley Nursery welcomes children from 3 months to 5 years. Many parents start their baby around the time maternity leave ends. Contact the nursery early so you can plan settling-in before your return to work.

How long does settling-in take for a baby?

It varies from baby to baby, but a gradual build-up over one to two weeks is common. Starting at least two weeks before you return to work gives you some flexibility. Ask the nursery how they plan settling-in for babies.

Can I send expressed breast milk to nursery?

Most nurseries with baby rooms accept expressed breast milk. Label every bottle with your baby's name and the date, and ask how it is stored and warmed. Agree your feeding plan with the staff before your baby starts.

Will the nursery follow my baby's nap routine?

A good baby room follows each baby's own pattern rather than one fixed nap time. Write down how and when your baby sleeps, and bring familiar items such as their usual sleeping bag. Naps may be shorter at first while your baby adjusts.

What are the nursery hours in JLT?
