British Nursery in Dubai: What the EYFS Framework Means for Your Child

A British nursery in Dubai is one that follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework used for children from birth to five in England. It covers seven areas of learning, from communication and physical development to early maths and creativity, and it is mostly delivered through play. Rainbow Valley Nursery in JLT follows the EYFS for children from 3 months to 5 years.

What "British nursery" actually means

Dubai has nurseries following many approaches: EYFS, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, the American Creative Curriculum and others. When a nursery calls itself British, it should mean one specific thing: it plans, teaches and tracks children's progress using the Early Years Foundation Stage, usually shortened to EYFS.

The EYFS is not a timetable of lessons. It is a set of goals for what young children should be able to do by around age five, plus guidance on how adults help them get there. That is why two EYFS nurseries can feel quite different on a visit, and still both be doing it properly.

The seven areas of learning, in plain words

The EYFS splits early learning into three prime areas, which matter most for babies and toddlers, and four specific areas, which grow in importance as children approach school.

Prime areas

  • Communication and language: listening, understanding and talking. For a two-year-old this might be naming animals in a picture book; for a four-year-old, retelling a story in their own words.
  • Physical development: big movements like climbing and balancing, and small ones like holding a crayon or doing up a zip.
  • Personal, social and emotional development: making friends, taking turns, managing feelings and becoming independent at things like washing hands.

Specific areas

  • Literacy: enjoying books, recognising letters and, later, early writing.
  • Mathematics: counting, shapes, sizes and patterns, usually through sand, water, blocks and songs.
  • Understanding the world: people, places, nature and how things work. In Dubai this often includes the many cultures and festivals children meet in their own class.
  • Expressive arts and design: painting, music, dance, role play and building.

Why play is the method, not a break from learning

Parents sometimes worry that an EYFS day looks like "just playing". In a good setting the play is planned. A water tray with jugs of different sizes is a maths activity. A pretend shop is language, numbers and social skills at once. Teachers watch, join in and note what each child can do, then plan the next activities around those observations.

At Rainbow Valley this sits alongside our curriculum approach, which draws on play-based and Reggio-inspired ideas to build curiosity and confidence. You can read more about that in our post on learning through play.

How progress is tracked

Instead of tests, EYFS nurseries keep a record of observations, photos and short notes for each child. Parents should be able to see this and talk to the key person about it. Ask how often you will get updates and what happens if a teacher notices a child needs more support with speech or movement.

How to spot a genuine EYFS nursery on a tour

Five quick checks during a visit tell you a lot:

  1. Ask about the key person system. Each child should have one named adult who knows them well.
  2. Look at the walls. Displays should show children's own work, not identical printed crafts.
  3. Ask to see a learning journal. A real one is full of specific observations.
  4. Watch the outdoor time. The EYFS values outdoor learning; it should be part of every day, with sensible shade and timing in Dubai's heat.
  5. Ask how they prepare children for FS1 and FS2. A British nursery should explain how its rooms lead naturally into the Foundation Stage at a British school.

Frequently asked questions

Is EYFS the same as the British curriculum?

The EYFS is the early years part of the British system. It covers birth to five, and children then move into Year 1 of the National Curriculum, usually after FS2 at school.

What ages does Rainbow Valley Nursery accept?

We welcome children from 3 months to 5 years, with programmes for each age group.

Does an EYFS nursery teach reading and writing?

It builds the foundations: speaking, listening, enjoying books, recognising sounds and letters, and the hand strength needed for writing, at a pace that suits each child.

How can I see the EYFS in action?
